Leap Year
Today we talk about Leap Year (l'annee bissextile). I'm not sure how well the students understood that every four years there is an extra day in February (especially when explained in French!) but we had fun making these cute frog calendars to practice counting our numbers.

Division 9 in Outer Space
This morning we read a book about Arthur. Arthur thought he was so big...until he saw an elephant...he thought the elephant was so big until he saw some mountains....he thought the mountains were so big until he saw planet earth...he thought planet earth was so big...until he saw outer space! Look closely at the astronauts :)

Sidewalk Chalk
What a beautiful afternoon it was. We went outside with our buddy class and brought out the sidewalk chalk. The students had fun decorating the pavement. They were covered in chalk dust but the colorful school ground was worth the mess!

Words Can Hurt
This afternoon, we did a lesson on how our words can hurt peoples feelings. The students cut out a heart, then crumpled it up. The crumpling up signified hurtful words (you are not my friend, you cannot play with us, I don't like your drawing). Then, we tried to make it better by smoothing out the heart and saying sorry. The students soon realized that it was impossible to get out all the wrinkles, just like it is impossible to take back hurtful words.
Pink Shirt Day
It was a sea of pink in division 9 today! We celebrated and discussed the origins of Pink Shirt Day. 10 years ago, a boy in Nova Scotia was bullied for wearing a pink shirt to school. To stand up to the bullies, his fellow students all wore pink shirts to support his friend. This sparked a great class discussion about how there is no such thing as "girl" and "boy" colors or "girl" and "boy" toys. Division 9 also designed their own pink shirts and decorated our classroom door.

100 Year Old Portraits
The students made portraits of what they think they will look like when they are 100 years old. To make a wrinkly face, they crumpled up the paper, and to make grey/white hair, they tore up cotton balls. They were laughing the whole morning :)
100 Day Crowns
Friday was such a fun day. It was our 100th day of school, pajama day, and hot lunch! We did many fun activities. Throughout the day, we did things like dance the twist for 100 seconds, counted how many times we could touch our head, knees and toes in 100 seconds and jogged on the spot for 100 seconds. The students also made crowns to celebrate being '100 days smarter'. I didn't take a picture of them wearing their crowns, but it was sure cute.

Working on the number 100
We had fun grouping 10 items together, 10 different times, to represent the number 100! You can also check out the 'Songs and Poems' page for a new song we learned today about the number 100. I also sent it home in the red duotangs this week.
