Hat Day

There were some pretty neat and creative hats today! For our morning activity, we read a story about a bear who lost his hat. Then the students created and decorated their own hat for the bear.

'oi'

The complex sound we are learning this week is 'oi'.

oi = wa

In your child's activity bag (which will go home Thursday this week), you will find the worksheet we did. You can keep this at home and practice the sound. Ask your child if they can tell you some words in French with the sound 'oi'.

Show them this picture to help if they can't remember.

Les gymnastiques

The students loved doing gymnastics today in gym! Here are some pictures of what our gym looks like.

Clean Up Your Act Performance

Tuesday we had another performance in the gym. It was a play called 'Clean Up Your Act'. It was all about littering, graffiti  and the importance of keeping our community clean. It was told like the story of the "Three Little Pigs" but with a different twist. The actors were hilarious and the students were laughing the entire time!

Cassie and Friends Puppet Show

Wednesday we had a puppet show presentation in the gym. It was about a girl named Cassie who had juvenile idiopathic arthritis. The show was about diversity and the moral of the story was that everyone is capable, but the way they accomplish things might look different than the way you do it. It was a fantastic show and the students enjoyed it. Ask your child what they learned!

Native Plants Workshop

Today, Veronica from Douglas College came to talk to us about plants that are native to BC. She did a puppet show of two friends walking in the forest and telling us about what they saw. She talked about how the plants are and/or were used by aboriginal peoples and taught us a Coast Salish story about the pine cone from a Douglas Fir tree. Then we did some art that narrated the story.

See below for the story our art tells...ask your child if they remember it

Michael and Gida puppet show

Used as medicine for problems in mouths and lungs. Tastes a little bit like licorice.

Moss. It is special because it does not have stems, flowers or roots. It grew when the dinosaurs were still alive!

Nootka Rose: First Nations Peoples used to eat the fruits and leaves. But never try them without an expert present as some parts of the plant can make you sick!

Salmonberries: They do not taste like fish but get their name because when they are ripe, they are the same pinky-red colour as salmon.

Part of a cedar tree that fell during one of our big wind storms. This one was 96 years old. It was fun to look at and count the rings!

Here are the pine cones from the Douglas Fir tree. The bark from a Douglas Fir tree is very during and protects the tree. Coast Salish Peoples say that once their was a forest fire and all the animals ran away except for the mice. The mice climbed the trees and hid in the pine cones and were protected from the fire. That is how you can tell a pine cone came from a Douglas Fir, it looks like there are mice hiding in the cone!

Cherry Blossoms

Last week, we went for a walk around the school and observed the cherry blossoms we saw in the neighbourhood. Then we painted cherry blossoms to decorate our bulletin board. I also gave them a sentence puzzle. They had to put the sentence together using clues: reading the words, looking for punctuation, looking for capital letters, and reading the sentence to see if it made sense.

cherry blossom - un cerisier

Our Incubator

Our eggs have arrived! We will incubate them over the next 21 days until they hatch. We have 12 eggs, but won't know which ones are fertilized until day 21. We could have 2 chicks, or we could have 12. It is always exciting to find out.

Division 9 in Outer Space!

Monday, we read a book about Arthur. Arthur thought he was so big...until he saw an elephant...he thought the elephant was so big until he saw some mountains....he thought the mountains were so big until he saw planet earth...he thought planet earth was so big...until he saw outer space! Look closely at the astronauts :)

Activity Bags

We are learning the sight word 'c'est' this week. In the activity bags, you will find a little booklet with sentences that contain that word. The students should be able to read 'C'est une' on their own. They may need help with the last word. Have your child point to each word as they read.
