Les monstres dans la division 9!

We have been working on a monster project with our buddy class. Friendly monsters of course! The students made a little booklet to introduce them. They are displayed on the bulletin boards outside the class. Come in and take a look.

Our first bit of writing!

This is such an exciting time of year when we see the kindergarteners beginning to write. Some students know how to write phonetically already and for some, this is the first time. The exciting part is, we are all learning to write in French together!

Tuesday, we read a story and then wrote what we wear outside when it is cold.

When learning to write, they slowly say the word and then write down all the sounds they hear. At the beginning, it is usually just the first and last sound they are able to write down. But some students are already writing a middle sound too!

Letter Jj

The letter we are learning this week is 'j'. Ask your child to teach you the action and the sound it makes. The students did such a good job printing this letter from top to bottom!

La Vie Est Belle

We are learning a new song called 'La vie est belle' (Life is Beautiful). It is sung by a Juno nominated children's music artist that just so happens to be a parent in our class! Gabriel's mom, Gina, gave us a couple of CD's and we will learn the French songs this year. The students love it. Below is the link to the song. Watch it and sing it together at home. Paul et Suzanne

Paul and Suzanne are characters from a series of books we read. The students practiced writing the word 'voici'. Ask them to read you what they wrote.

Bones

Julia brought in some bones today for Show and Tell. The students were fascinated by it. We spent the morning passing them around and discussing our observations. Although there were no dinosaur bones, some of the students insisted that one of them was. It was so much fun to pretend!

Letter Vv

Today we learned about the letter 'v'. Ask your child to teach you the action and the sound it makes. They loved this one because it is pretending you are driving a car (voiture)!

Hibernation

Monday's presentation by the Douglas College Ecology Centre was fantastic. We learned when/why/how bears hibernate but we also learned about all the other animals in BC that hibernate as well. Ask your child to tell you about what they learned. Use this picture as a guide...all the animals are hidden in the picture and the students were the ones who placed them there :)

Voici

We are beginning to learn our French sight words. These are words that are common in French and are found in early reader books. Today we learned 'voici'. The students practiced writing it on the white boards.

Letter Bb

This week we are learning all about the letter 'b'. Ask your child to teach you the action and the sound it makes. It is common to reverse 'b''s and 'd''s so we will be working on this throughout kindergarten and learning little tricks to help us remember which letter is which. I will post the tricks we learn as we learn them!

Calm down tent

This is our new calm down tent. It is an area in our class where the students can go to to calm down and get back in the green zone. It's a little exciting to have a tent in the class so all the students took turns using it today to see what it was like. There are some rules the students have to follow in order for it to be effective. Ask your child to tell you about it.

New Years Resolution

Yesterday we celebrated the New Year. We made party hats and party blowers and each student came up with a resolution. Some students wanted to learn something new (playing an instrument, tying a shoe) and other students wanted to keep practicing something they know how to do (a sport, reading). Ask your child what goal they drew :)

This week, we are learning the letter 'g'. Ask your child to teach you the action and the sound it makes. The students were able to come up with a lot of words that contained that letter. See if you can brainstorm some at home too!
