Pink Shirt Day

The students did a great job presenting the song at our Pink Shirt Day assembly yesterday. I was a very proud teacher!!

With the help of our big buddies, we decorated our door with pink shirts and wrote and drew messages of kindness and respect.

We also read the book "It's ok to be different" - "Tous différents" en francais - by Todd Parr. It is a great story about embracing our differences and treating everyone with respect. We then did a Todd Parr inspired art project which is displayed on our bulletin board.

Voici

In the book bags this week, you will find some flashcards and a 'voici' book. With the flashcards, the students can practice naming the letter, saying the sound it makes, and brainstorming words with that sound. You don't have to do all of that each time, switch it up each time you practice.

The 'voici' book may have some words the students cannot yet read. This is ok. They can identify the word 'voici' on each page and then point to letters they recognize, point to the words as you read them, or look at the picture and complete the sentence however they like. You can also count the words and letters on each page.

Happy reading!

Pink Shirt Day Assembly

During our Pink Shirt Day assembly on February 27, we are going to sing this song with our buddy class. We have been practicing actions to go along with it and we will teach the rest of the divisions next week and then do a mini 'flash mob' as a school. The words are a bit complicated for the K's but that's ok. They love the song and enjoy doing the dance! Click on the link below and listen to it together at home.

Letter Hh

This week, we are learning about the letter 'h'. Ask your child to teach you the action and the sound it makes. In French, the 'h' sound is almost always silent!

We have now learned all of our letter sounds! The 'w' and 'q' are complex sounds and we will learn them later on this spring. Keep practicing the letter sounds as often as you can!

Personal Space Goals

Since the beginning of kindergarten, the students have been learning about personal space. Ask your child what personal space (espace personnel) is and to tell you about their 'invisible bubble' (bulle magique). We will begin doing some self-evaluation activities so the students can self-assess how they are doing. Each day, we will check in before lunch and then again at the end of the day so they can reflect on how they did.

Zero Heroes Performance

On Monday, we watched a play called 'Zero Heroes'. It was all about waste: what is waste, what does it do to our environment, and what we can do to produce less of it. It was geared towards young children and the students loved it! Below is a link to their website. If you click on FREE RESOURCES, they have printables and games you can play. They also have the link to the songs they sang, although I couldn't get that to work.

100th Day of School!

Today was our 100th day of school! It was such a fun (but exhausting!) day. I wouldn't be surprised if your child goes to bed a little early tonight. We started off the day making portraits of ourselves of what we thought we'd look like at 100 years old. I had written down some activities. Randomly throughout the day, I would pick a card and we would do that activity for 100 seconds. We danced the twist for 100 seconds, we tried to hold our breath for 100 seconds, we jogged for 100 seconds, we counted how many times we could touch our head, shoulders, knees and toes for 100 seconds. It was so much fun! We ended the day by making crowns and being proud of how much we've learned already in 100 days of school.

Letter Yy

This week, we are learning all about the letter 'y'. We only have a few letters left to learn and they aren't the most common ones so do not worry if your child does not remember the sound right away. Keep practicing at home, we will keep practicing in class, and eventually it will stick!

Golden Pearl Performance

To kick off Lunar New Year, on Monday we watched a musical performance by Golden Pearl Ensemble. They played a variety of songs from different parts of China and showed us traditional instruments that date back to between 2000-3000 years old. It was interactive, informative, and fun! Below are two videos Mme Eve took. Hopefully the sound works!

Le jour de la marmotte

February 2nd is Groundhog Day (le jour de la marmotte). We learned a little bit about groundhogs this morning and then made a cute craft. Ask your child to tell you some of the facts they learned!

Snowman Math

Wednesday, we did some snowman math. Each student chose a number between one and ten and then represented it 4 times using different materials: paint, stamps, stickers, felts, pompoms, etc. Ask your child to count for you in French :)
