Voici Cookie

Our first chick hatched this morning! The students were over the moon when they came into the class. We brainstormed ideas for names, took a vote, and the students chose to name him Cookie. So cute. We drew pictures of Cookie and they wrote a simple sentence. Here are some pictures. They are not very good ones because it's hard to get a good picture of a chicken! After school, another egg hatched so when the kids come tomorrow, Cookie will have a sister or brother :)

Cookie - his feathers are still wet from being in the egg. As he was drying, we noticed his feathers were white on his belly, which reminded the kids of a cookie!

Voici Cookie.

Regarde Cookie.

J'aime Cookie beaucoup, beaucoup.

Bonne fete Cookie.

Il y a une banane sur ma tete!

This morning, we read a silly book called 'Il y a une banane sur ma tete' (There is a banana on my head). I projected in onto the smartboard so we could read it together as a class. Then, we made a class book and each student wrote their own page. They thought it was hilarious and were laughing the whole time!

Il y a une fraise sur mon nez.

Il y a une orange sur ma bouche.

Il y a une orange sur ma tete.

Il y a une pizza sur ma tete.

Il y a une pomme sur ma tete.

Day 19

We have been counting down the days and there are only 2 more to go until our chickens start hatching! Between Wednesday night and Friday morning, those eggs that were fertilized will hatch. Every few days, we have been learning about the changes that are happening inside the egg. Here is what they looked like a few days ago.

Sentence Writing

The students have been working hard to speak and write simple, complete sentences in French. Last week we did a fun activity with a broken up sentence. After reading a book, I wrote the words from one of the sentences on bibs and mixed them up. The students had to put the sentence back in order by reading the words and looking for clues (capital letters, period, etc).

Au Revoir Papillon!

This afternoon, we released our butterflies. They were the first batch to hatch and we didn't want to leave them cooped up in the class over the long weekend. We sat quietly on the grass outside and watched them fly away. Some of them were slow to take off so the students held them gently until they were ready. Every time one flew off, the students would wave goodbye with the paper butterflies they made this morning. It was so sweet. We also painted butterflies to put in our window to remind us of them :)

'on'

The complex sound we are learning this week is 'on'. Ask your child to teach you the sound it makes and action, as well as read some of the words we are learning.

Burns Bog

Our field trip on Monday was so much fun. Thank you to all the parents who came and helped on our walk. We have been looking at all the things we collected on our scavenger hunt and reviewing what we learned. The students have been studying the items with a magnifying class and today, we mapped out our walk and drew all the things we remembered. Ask your child what they can tell you about it.

'labrador tea'
'tracter'

'skunk weed'
'moss'

'cedar tree'
'salal berry'

Eggs

It has been such a busy week that I haven't had time to update everyone on all the exciting things that are happening in our class. I will send a letter home Friday with more detailed information about this but yesterday, we became home to 12 chickens eggs. We will incubate them over the next 21 days until they hatch. We have 12 eggs, but won't know which ones are fertilized until day 21. We could have 2 chicks, or we could have 12. It is always exciting to find out.We will take care of them for six days once they hatch before returning them to the farm.

Chrysalis

Our caterpillars have transformed into chrysalis! Here is some vocabulary the students are learning:

un oeuf = egg
une chenille = caterpillar
une chrysalide = chrysalis
un papillon = butterfly

Parachute

Today we played with the parachute in gym class!

'ch'

In the book bags, you will find this book. In the book, you will find the sentence 'Je vois...'. That means 'I see'. Then it has a word with the 'ch' sound in it. If your child does not know every word, please don't worry. Have them point to the words as you try and read them or they can read the words they know on the page (je, un, une). Another idea is to find the word with 'ch' in it. They are good word detectives!

Image result for school bus

Don't forget that on Monday we are going on a field trip. We will leave just after 9am. The students will eat snack when we are there so please pack something that will fit in their pocket and will be filling.

La chenille qui fait des trous

We read 'La chenille qui fait des trous' (The Very Hungry Caterpillar) and then painted our own hungry caterpillar...with balloons!
