Ma famille

Today, we drew our families.  Some families consist of three people, some seven or eight. The students put a lot of effort into their drawings and then enjoyed presenting who lived in their house. They couldn't wait until I put it up on the bulletin board so everyone could see!

Gong Hei Fat Choy

Happy Lunar New Year!! I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend celebrating. I know there are a lot of fun things that are happening around the city. We have been talking about it in class and doing fun art to decorate the walls. Here are some pictures of the crafts we did.

The students used pastels to color in the characters for Gong Hei Fat Choy.

We compared our languages' alphabet.

We practiced how to say Happy New Year in several different languages.
This is the Cantonese way of saying it.

It is the year of the rooster. In French, 'le coq'.

The students painted the roosters with a fork. It was the best way to get the feathers on top of his head. The students thought it was hilarious.

We watched a video of the dragon dance. The students then made their own dragons. They had fun dancing them around the class!

Kung Jaadee

Tuesday morning, we had a Haida singer, drummer and storyteller come to our school to teach the students about her culture. Her name, Kung Jaadee, means Women in the Moon. She sang interactive songs, talked about her button blanket (her family crest), and told the students stories about animals and people from many years ago.

Ways to make 5

The students were using dual colored counters to explore different ways to make five. For example, if you had 2 yellow counters and 3 red counters, that made five, and if you had 4 red counters and 1 yellow counter, that also made five. The students spent a good (quiet!) fifteen minutes working on this this morning.

Letter of the week

This week, we are learning all about the letter 'f'. Ask your child to teach you the action and the sound it makes.

lourd/léger

As part of our math lesson today, the students got to use a balancing scale to compare the weight of two objects. We practiced how to say "____est plus lourd que ___" (is heavier than) and "____est plus léger que ____" (is lighter than). We did it as a class and then they got to partner up and find their own objects. They had a great time exploring the class to find fun items to weigh. When they were done, they drew and wrote their observations.

Un parapluie

Even though it turned out to be a beautiful day today, we did a rainy day art activity. The students designed umbrellas out of paper plates, and made rain out of string. It was fun to see the kids get creative with their umbrella design and we were happy we didn't have to 'use' our umbrellas today at recess and lunch!

un parapluie - umbrella
il pleut - it's raining
la pluie - rain

Bake Sale this Friday

This Friday is Bake Sale. Don't forget to bring a loonie for a treat at lunch!

Voici Paul. Voici Suzanne.

Paul et Suzanne are characters from a series of books we read throughout the year. Today, we wrote two sentences: Voici Paul. Voici Suzanne. Our focus was beginning the sentence with a capital letter, putting a space between the words, and ending the sentence with a period (or as we say 'un point a la fin!). The word 'voici' is also a high frequency word. The students should soon be able to read it and write it on their own. Ask your child to read you the sentences that they wrote :)
