Class Photos and Bake Sale
I forgot to remind the students that it is bake sale tomorrow. Also, the students took home our class photo today. After school, I found one on the floor in the coatroom. Please let me know if you did not receive one.
Bonne Nuit Monde
Yesterday, we read the story 'Goodnight World' (I translated it in French as I read). It was a story about saying goodnight to all the animals found on the pacific west coast. After reading, the students choose an animal to illustrate and then wrote bonne nuit (good night) and then sounded out the animal they choose. I am so proud of all the students and how hard they worked to sound it out! We are also working conventions of writing (starting with a capital letter, putting spaces between the words, and ending the sentence with a period). The students love saying 'un point a la fin'! (A period at the end!)

"I'm sorry, it was an accident"
For our Second Step lesson this week, we are talking about what to say if we do something by accident. An accident is when something happens that we didn't mean, it is not something done on purpose. In the picture below, the little girl was running outside and not looking where she was going. She accidentally bumped into her friend and caused him to fall. This, and other similar accidents, often happen at school. We discussed how important it is for the person that caused the accident to explain what happened so that their friend understands it was not done on purpose. We role played and practiced saying:
"I'm sorry. It was an accident. Are you o.k.?"
I've already witnessed some students use this in class. It is a great problem solving strategy.
Ask your child to look at the picture with you and discuss what you see. Have a conversation about what the little girl can do to help fix the situation.

Inukshuks
On Monday, the students made Inukshuks out of rocks they collected. Inukshuks are structures built from giant rocks. They were used by Aboriginal people to mark good hunting areas and as travel references. Most students were able to identify places in Vancouver and Richmond where they have seen them!

All about Bears!
We had a presentation from the Northwest Wildlife Preservation Society today. We saw pictures of different bears found around the world (panda, sloth, polar, grizzly, black and spirit bear). Then we learned more about the bears who live in Canada and BC. The presenter brought in a claw, fur, and skulls from a black bear, a grizzly bear, and a polar bear, that we got to touch and feel. Some students were a bit nervous about the giant polar bear skull but everyone was brave and touched it!

Jump Rope for Heart
April is Jump Rope for Heart month. We had our kick off assembly this afternoon, and all month, we will be practicing skipping and playing jumping games such as hopscotch and jumping relays in the gym. Then, on
Friday, April 29th, we will be participating in our
annual "Jump Rope for Heart" school-wide event where the whole school will take turns jumping rope all day.
Letter of the Week
This week, we learned all about the letter 'Zz'. Ask your child to teach you the song and action.
