During our morning calendar routine, the students say and then sing the days of the week. Ask your child to teach you the song.

Letter of the Week
This week, we are learning all about the letter 'Uu'. Ask your child to teach you the action and the sound it makes. This is always a popular letter because the action is to plug your nose and say 'ca pue' (it stinks).

En hiver, je porte...
Today we journaled about what items of clothing we wear in the winter. They are getting so good at sounding out known words...I am very proud of how hard they are trying! At this point in Kindergarten, if they can identify the most obvious sound(s), that is fantastic. For example, if they were trying to spell the word 'apple' and were able to write 'al' or 'apl', that is something to celebrate!
When you aren't feeling rushed as you are leaving the house, ask your child to teach you the vocabulary for the articles of clothing they wear when it's cold outside.
mittens - les mitaines
boots - les bottes
toque - une tuque
scarf - un foulard
hat - un chapeau
sweater - un chandail
jacket - un manteau
umbrella - une parapluie
snow pants - pantalon de neige

Stomach Flu
We had almost half the class away today and it looks like it is mostly because of the stomach flu :(
We missed all our friends who were away today and we hope everyone feels better soon.

C'est l'hiver
Today, we reviewed the seasons and did some winter tree art. There were six steps to this art project (the students thought that was sooooo many!) but they all did a great job. We cut triangles out of construction paper, used pastels to draw bare tree branches, and then used paint for the snow.
Afterwards, they had to glue on the sentence: C'est l'hiver ! (It's winter.). We talked about looking at the letters for clues so we knew which word went first (capital letter - lettre majuscule) and which word went last (punctuation).

Morning Message
As part of our calendar routine, I write a morning message to read to the students. Sometimes I write what we will do that day and sometimes I ask a question. I always leave parts of the message blank (either a simple word or a sound) and together we sound it out and fill it in. This is a great activity to do as we begin to learn how to write. You can also do this at home on a Saturday morning. Keep it simple and keep it fun. The students love being 'word detectives' and figuring out how to complete it!
Here is an example of today's.

Nos resolutions de 2017
For the past two days, we have been talking about our resolutions and goals for the year. We've brainstormed ideas and discussed them as a class. Today, we sat in a circle and passed around bunny (he is actually called Calm Down Bunny and I use him during our Second Step lessons, but sometimes he comes out during our regular French lessons as well). When you are holding the bunny, that means you are the only one who is talking while the rest of us listen. We pass bunny around the circle until everyone has had a turn. The students had some great resolutions, for example learning how to do a cartwheel, eating healthy fruits and vegetables every day, listening to my mom or dad the first time, learning how to read, learning how to swim and being nicer to my sister/brother. Some of the ideas where so sweet and thoughtful! Ask your child what they shared today :)

Snowman Measurement
Today, we measured snowmen using cubes. The students were asked to measure four snowmen, then color the tallest one blue and the shortest one green. Measuring things doesn't always have to be with a ruler. We will learn how to use different tools to measure and then learn the vocabulary necessary to describe our observations.
le plus grand = tallest/biggest
le plus petit = smallest

Bonne Annee 2017!!
Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a wonderful winter break. The students were excited to share what they did but were happy to return to school and see all their friends. It was a great first day back!
