Book Bags
In this weeks book bags, you will find a printing practice sheet of the letter 'k'. 'K' is tricky to write and a common mistake is not connected the two slanted lines in the middle. Practice at home if you can using felts, paint, highlighters or crayons.
There is also a book called 'On mange'. This book is to practice reading 'il' or 'elle'. They are two sight words that are important to recognize in print.
'il' means 'he'
'elle' means 'she'
'mange' means ' is eating'

Hungry Caterpillar Hats
With our buddy class, we re-read an interactive Smartboard story of 'A Very Hungry Caterpillar' and then made caterpillar hats. I don't have a picture of everyone wearing the hats but it was sure cute! Some students even turned theirs into a dog hat instead and pretended they were a character from the 'Go, Dog, Go' play.

Classroom Jobs
The students are always so good at keeping the classroom clean but there are some chores that are favored over others. We now have 'les taches' that we will do at the end of the day that the students are assigned to. Every Monday, the students will get new jobs to do for the week. We started them today and it took a little longer than I thought (they didn't want to stop!) so I apologize that we were a little late being dismissed.
'ou'
This week, we are learning the complex sound 'ou'. Ask your child to teach you the sound it makes and have them try to read some of the French words we are learning to read.
La chenille qui fait des trous
Yesterday, we read 'La chenille qui fait des trous' (The Very Hungry Caterpillar). Then the students made their own hungry caterpillar using balloons to stamp the circles. Our caterpillars are getting so big. I think by Friday we might see a cocoon or two. Stay tuned!

La Journee de la Terre
Today is Earth Day and all the activities we did were around our planet. We read the book "J'aime la terre" by Todd Parr, then each student thought about something they could do to help take care of the earth. They brainstormed some great ideas like recycle, use cloth bags instead of plastic, take care of animals, turn off the lights when they are not in the room, do not throw away food, do not litter, etc. They wrote down a promise on a piece of paper. Then we looked at pictures of the earth and watched part of Chris Hadfield's Space Oddity video on youtube. Chris Hadfield Space Oddity Here are some pictures of some of the activities.

Sur
In the students book bags today, there is a book called 'sur'. This means 'on', as in on top of something. When reading the book with your child, you can:
-spell the word together, s-u-r spells sur
-focus on differentiating between 'le' and 'la'
-ask them to find certain letters on the page
-read 'sur la _____' and have them teach you the vocabulary word based on the picture (it is not expected that they know all the words, but they should be able to get at least half!).

There is an owl in the class!
We had our presentation from O.W.L. today along with Division 8. The presenter brought in a falcon named Flicker and a barn owl called Abby. It was so neat to see an owl up close and the students were captivated!
falcon
She put water drops on the feathers and the students learned that water is not absorbed due to the oil on the feathers. The drops of water just rolled right off.
Something spooked the owl and she began flapping her wings.
