'on'

The complex sound we are learning this week is 'on'. Ask your child to teach you the sound and action, as well as read some of the words we are learning.

Les Poussins

Our eggs are beginning to hatch! When I came in on Tuesday morning, we had two baby chicks. One yellow and one brown. The students were so excited. We brainstormed some names and then voted on our favorites. They chose to name the yellow one Stephanie, and the brown one Waffles. Stephanie appears to be having difficulty with one leg. The farmer said it is not uncommon for the their hips not to set right away. Sometimes it fixes itself, sometimes it does not. If not, she will be fine, we just have to help her eat and drink. Keep your fingers crossed!

Mon sac de formes

The students made 'les sacs de formes' (shape bags). Inside, they cut up different shapes. They practiced naming the shapes by randomly picking them out of the bag and saying what shape it was.

un cercle = circle
un triangle = triangle
un rectangle = rectangle
un carre = square

Book Bags

In the book bags this week, you will find a book called 'Le pique-nique'. The students should be able to read 'Voici le' and then look at the picture to give them a clue for the food vocabulary word. They practiced reading it to their big buddies today.

Day 16

This week, we learned what is happening inside the eggs as the chicks grow and get ready to hatch. We also did a writing activity. As a class, we wrote 'Regarde mon oeuf'. Then the students each wrote it down and drew an egg they observed. We are working on beginning our sentence with a capital letter, making spaces between words, and ending with a period.

'Je porte' books

In the book bags this week, you will find a book called 'Qu'est-ce que tu portes?' (What are you wearing).

Please practice reading the words together. have your child point to each word as they read.

Je porte = I am wearing

Energy Blast

To accommodate some of the extra energy the students have lately, we take 'energy blast' breaks in the afternoon. We watch a video from Action Schools that teaches us different dance and exercise moves. So cute!

Life Cycle of a Butterfly

This week, we finished our last project on butterflies. The students demonstrated the life cycle of a butterfly using leaves, woodchips, pasta and coffee filters. It was a fun project and the finishing product turned out really well!

'oi'

The complex sound we are learning this week is 'oi'. It makes the sound 'wa' (the 'a' pronounced like in the word in although).

Ask your child to read you some of the words we are learning.

sounding out words

Division 9 is working hard to sound out words when writing. Today, they each got a white board and I would give them common French words to write. They enjoyed pretending it was a spelling test. I'll have to take advantage of that while they find it fun! Afterwards, the students got into groups and wrote down all the words they knew on a giant piece of paper.

Counting by 5

We are learning how to count to 50 by 5. Ask your child to count for you in French!

Au revoir papillons!

This morning, we released our butterflies. We sat quietly on the grass outside and watched them fly away. Every time one flew off, the students cheered and sang 'au revoir papillons, au revoir'. It was so sweet! I forgot my phone inside so I don't have any pictures, but it was a great experience. Here are some pictures of the butterfly life cycle activity we did this week.

Butterfly Art

Tomorrow, we will release our butterflies. The students said they will miss them but understand they would rather be outside. We made some butterfly art today to put up in our class to remind us of them. The students painted coffee filters and then used a pipe cleaner to form them into butterfly wings. We put them on the windows so they are hard to see in the pictures. Even though we will let them go, we still have some more butterfly activities planned next week.

The coffee filters left an imprint on the desks!

Eggs

Our eggs have arrived! We will incubate them over the next 21 days until they hatch. We have 12 eggs, but won't know which ones are fertilized until day 21. We could have 2 chicks, or we could have 12. It is always exciting to find out.

Inside the incubator is a thermometer. It needs to stay very warm, 99 degrees fahrenheit, to mimic the warmth of their mother. Tomorrow, the students will start monitoring the temperature and help to keep it stabilized.

The eggs come in a variety of colors. The chicks can be yellow, brown or even black. The color of the egg does not indicate which color. It will be another fun surprise.

This was an online program only offered in English. I translate it in French as I am teaching.
